Street Photography
The reason I like street photography is because when you take a picture you capture the things that are around you that you wouldn't normally notice and anyone could do it. You also get to know your street better. Also its really interesting to see how people see the street by the way they take photos for example some photographers focus more on the people and chaos but other photographers take photos of things on the street and graffiti. Also its cool to think that you can photograph something that will never be there again and you can stop time and look at it forever however will other photography you could keep capturing it as it wont move.
Everybody street
“Everybody Street illuminates the lives and work of New York’s iconic street photographers and the incomparable city that has inspired them for decades. The documentary pays tribute to the spirit of street photography through a cinematic exploration of New York City, and captures the visceral rush, singular perseverance and at times immediate danger customary to these artists. Covering nine decades of street photography, “Everybody Street” explores the careers and influences of many notable photographers––a number of whom have never been documented, featuring: Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Jill Freedman, Bruce Gilden, Joel Meyerowitz, Rebecca Lepkoff, Mary Ellen Mark, Jeff Mermelstein, Clayton Patterson, Ricky Powell, Jamel Shabazz, Martha Cooper, and Boogie, with historians Max Kozloff and Luc Sante."

Homework #2 -Favourite photo
Elliott Erwitt I really like this photo by the street photographer Elliott Erwitt because of the way the things in the picture are positioned. I think the way the dog is placed on the persons legs makes the picture cool and really interesting to look at.I like the way the person is sat on the step don't know he's being photographed due to the dog being sat on his lap. This makes the photo look natural like it he hasn't been told to sit like that. I also like the way its in black and white because it really brings out the black parts of the photo for example the shadow in the window and the black railing going along the stairs and gradually comes of the side of the image. I like the amount of lines in the photo as you have the lines from the tiles on the stairs and the lines from the railings. I think this makes the photo very neat and theres lots to look at, which I like. |
Lee Friedlander
I really like this picture by the street photographer Lee Friedlander mainly because of the reflection of the man in the window. I think it draws your eyes to the middle of the photo and then you start to notice the other people in the image. I also like the way the way you can only see half the women because she's walking out the door, and that he's captured her walking. You can also see only half the mans face as he's captured him walking as well |
photo challenge #1 -Ways of seeing
Shadows & Reflections
Shadows and reflections are a really interesting way to take a street photograph because It shows not only who is taking to photo but whats around them. Also a shadow could show you how the photographer is taking the photo and the way they are positioned. This makes the picture interesting because its like you are the photographer and you can see things from there point of view. Walk on by
I like the technique 'walk on by' the best because you can see everything in one photo. You also have to take a lot in and there is also a good contrast between the foreground and background. I really like it. |
Looking Down
I think taking a photo looking down is very interesting because is like the world is flat. Its a bird's eye view which gives you a different view on the world you live in. Also you notice things that you would not normally notice. This is a very interesting way of seeing. Over the Shoulder
Over the shoulder gives the person who is looking at the photo a perspective of the photographer and what they see as they walk through the street. Also it shows the people who are around them and what they see as well. |
These are some pictures I took when pretending that my school was a street. We used Garry Winogrand as are inspiration, focusing mainly on his photo called 'Sunset Blouolevard 1969'
2nd Set of Garry Winogrand Photos
To take these photos I used a Canon Camera with no setting. I think this was a good camera to use because it has a fast shutter speed and this is good to capture people when walking.I went around my school taking photos of people as if they were on a street. I tried taking photos in black and white and in colour to see if colour made a difference. I think its interesting to see the difference between a coloured photo and a black and white photo and in my option I prefer the coloured photos.

I like photo because the four girls at in the foreground positioned and I was able to react quickly to unfolding events. I have attempted a variety of compositions and camera angles. I like they way one of the girls in pointing to herself a if she's posing for the camera. From this photo I think you can tell who the leader of the group is and I like the way you can see the girls different personalities throw a photo. |

I don't like this photo as much because in my option it don't has much of a purpose. |
photo challenge #2 - Bruce Gilden
Bruce Gilden is a member of the Magnum photo agency and a famous street photographer who mainly works in New York city. He is famous for his confrontational approach, pouncing on unsuspecting pedestrians and shooting them at very close quarters using an off camera flash.
There is usually a sense of movement in his pictures created by a slower than normal shutter speed combined with a much faster burst of bright flash light. This ghosting effect and the strange distortion of the wide angle lens is typical of his street style. |
Here are some examples of his work....
Here are some pictures I took using Bruce Gilden as my inspiration.
The camera I used was a canon and I set it to slow sink flash, this means the shutter is open for longer and the the flash is on which allows more light in the photo.

I like this photo in particular because of the blurriness and the head phone cord going form Peters ear to his mouth.I also like the line from the lockers going from one edge of the photo to the other. Also you cant really see his features very much which makes you focus on the black glasses. I think if I made this photo black and white it would really make the lines show and look really effective. |
EBI:
I don't like this as much because its not blurry because I wasn't walking. Also Im covering my face which means you cant see my facial expression, which is the what Bruce Gilden focuses on. To make this better I think I should put it in a black and white effect and maybe take it when Im walking to get the blurry effect. |
Photo Challenge #3 -Diagonals
The idea for this challenge comes from Eric Kim's great street photography site. Street photographs are often about dramatic situations or view points. Drama is created in pictures in lots of ways but using strong diagonal lines is one technique often used by street photographers |
